چکیده

Tissue Engineering In article number 2207882, Ryan Y. Nguyen, Michael Mak, and co-workers report the fabrication of collagen I hydrogels with topology that mimics complex extracellular matrix architectures in tissues. The generated mesoscopic features, termed islands, are tunable modulate bulk hydrogel mechanical properties. Collagen islands can stem cell behavior differentiation. This method provides novel scaffolding materials for tissue engineering.

Metamaterials: Snapping Mechanical Metamaterials under Tension (Adv. Mater. 39/2015).

By exploiting snap-through instabilities, D. Pasini and co-workers design a damage-tolerant mechanical metamaterial that snaps sequentially under tension, thereby accommodating a very large deformation up to 150%. On page 5931, they describe how the nonlinear mechanical response of the metamaterial can be robustly programmed by tuning the architecture of its unit cell.

Collagen can modulate cell interactions with fibronectin

We have examined the effects of soluble collagen on the function of fibronectin in baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells. Collagen and its purified alpha1(l) chain noncompetitively inhibited cell spreading on substrates precoated with fibronectin or a 75,000-D cell-binding fragment of fibronectin. Neither preincubation of cells with collagen followed by washing nor the addition of collagen to previou...

Nanoelectrodes: Large-Scale Nanoelectrode Arrays to Monitor the Dopaminergic Differentiation of Human Neural Stem Cells (Adv. Mater. 41/2015).

A large-scale homogeneous nanocup-electrode array (LHONA) capable of noninvasive real-time monitoring of dopamine generation from human neural-stem-cell-derived midbrain neurons is described by J.-W. Choi, K.-B. Lee, and co-workers on page 6356. LHONA, fabricated through sequential laser interference lithography (LIL), is a conductive cell-culture platform that is extremely important for electr...

Chemicals that modulate stem cell differentiation.

Important cellular processes such as cell fate are likely to be controlled by an elaborate orchestration of multiple signaling pathways, many of which are still not well understood or known. Because protein kinases, the members of a large family of proteins involved in modulating many known signaling pathways, are likely to play important roles in balancing multiple signals to modulate cell fat...

Microgel film dynamics modulate cell adhesion behavior.

A material's mechanical properties greatly control cell behavior at the cell–substrate interface. In this work, we demonstrate that microgel multilayers have unique elastic and viscoelastic-like properties that can be modulated to produce morphological changes in fibroblasts cultured on the film. Protein adsorption is also examined and the data are contrasted with the number of cells adhered. T...
